I find myself still fascinated by the way one can play with light and form in the context of three dimensions, but light as layers of transparency. As an admirer of Cezanne’s work I never thought it would come to this. Yet I think there is still a connection.
Early in our careers Roy Lichtenstein and I used to have extended discussions about visual structure. Cezanne was the role model for a concept of the picture plane. Last time Roy visited with me before he died, he saw my work and said I was having more fun than he was. Because of his fame, he was trapped in a signature style. Sometimes it was boring and he could no longer afford to experiment. I said, yes, but Roy, you are laughing all of the way to the bank!
